While scanning the news briefly, I found this gem:
For those who do not read French: you should!
What this article in Le Temps points out is a possible emerging crisis in the pharmaceutical industry. While the demand for pharmaceuticals will stay high, most health care budgets are being tightened and controlled by government and what is equally alarming is that the industry’s innovation momentum has been lost. The present intellectual property system is often defended by pointing to this industry, however that argument too is loosing ground very quickly. In brief, the pharma industry needs to re-think its commercial model, or what the geeks calls business model hacking. The door is wide open for pharma 2.0.

The quality of pharmaceuticals will remain high on everybody’s agenda, however the sustainability of the present commercial system is being seriously questioned. This is indeed good news, and I look forward to some good work in this area. This is a great opportunity to move the present IP system to a social enterprise system. Ah, the challenges of action philosophy!
How does the not-for-profit future of the pharmaceutical industry look like? Bright and dignified, I would sincerely hope.
